I am a Taiwanese American married to a Japanese living in Yokohama, a typical housewife blessed with two lovely daughters. Here is the story of my kimono lesson so far.
Ever since middle school, I was very foud of kimono after reading a manga
series "Haikara San ga Tooru" by Yamato Waki. Kimono to me, who
loved drawing and painting, was one of the most overwhelming beauty in
this world. I wanted to learn thought about wearing kimono one day.
However, due to childcare and busy working, I could not find the time to
do so. My husband's work required us to move overseas frequently from time
to time and taking such lesson was almost impossible. My wish was finally
fulfilled last year around April as my kids grew up and my schedule became
less hectic to handle.
THE KIMONO Gakuin Aobadai Classroom was very close to my house within walking
distance. My first goal was to learn till I can dress up my two daughters
at their "Coming of Age Ceremony", also known as Seijinshiki.
Mrs.S,my kimono basic class instructor, was very kind and patient with
me. She taught me every single detail and bent of tying knots so it wouldn't
fall apart. History of yukata and kimono was introduced by the time of
summer. All sorts of fun facts of kimono's materials and its cultures started
to kick in and the lesson became more and more interesting. I began to
practice seriously at home, wearing and tying knots repeatedly. It took
me about 3 months from start to learn how to wear the Nagajuban(kimono
underwear) properly, and about 4 months to wear the kimono completely by
myself. Of course, that also included tying the Obi(the fabric belt knot).
As a result, I was able to wear kimono occasionally for the class and small
parties.
The photo you are looking at is me wearing kimono attending my daughter's
School Entrance Ceremony earlier in April. Although there are still many
knacks of wearing kimono which I haven't quite mastered, I am just so happy
that I can wear it all by myself. My husband praises my achievement and
I am eager to continue. Ganbarimasu ! |
